Trolls

Trolls, or Zhandarans in their ancient tongue, are a diverse species of large humanoids known for their regenerative powers and thick hides. They inhabit various biomes across Kastorix, typically in smaller groups. The largest troll community is on the tropical island chain of Te-Ohuvi. While intelligent and social, trolls generally dislike large crowds and prefer living in smaller, close-knit communities.

Physical Characteristics

Trolls are generally broad and bulky, possessing thick, hide-like skin in faded non-human colors, ranging from gray to cyan. Their physical features include large tusks and pointed ears similar to those of elves. The most famous trait of trolls is their regenerative ability. While not as potent as magical creatures like hydras, trolls can heal from large wounds and regenerate fingers over the course of days. They can also reattach lost limbs by holding them to the wound. However, their hides and regenerative abilities do not work against wounds caused by fire, making it a significant weakness and a revered element in troll culture. Troll regeneration is also quite draining and requires a good calorie intake. Trolls generally have a poor sense of depth perception, especially at a distance, which makes them prefer close-range communication and combat.

Society and Culture

Community Structure

Troll communities are typically small, with a structure that varies among different groups. Some communities are led by an elected leader, while others are guided by a respected elder or shaman. Nomadic troll groups travel long distances across Kastorix, adapting their lifestyle to the environments they traverse. Trolls value strength, resilience, and community bonds, often gathering for feasts and storytelling sessions.

Settlements

Troll settlements differ by their location and often take inspiration from the local culture and environment. The largest troll settlements are on the islands of Te-Ohuvi. Trolls build sturdy, practical homes using natural materials, often incorporating regenerative plants and resilient woods. Their settlements are designed to be defensible and self-sufficient, with communal spaces for gatherings and celebrations.

Economy and Craftsmanship

Trolls are skilled craftsmen, known for their ability to create durable and practical items from natural materials. They excel in woodworking, stone carving, and metalworking, creating tools, weapons, and decorative items. They are also adept at foraging and hunting, trading surplus goods with neighboring communities. Trolls are known for their unique regenerative salves and potions, which are highly valued in trade.

Religion and Beliefs

Trolls have a deep spiritual connection to nature and the elements, often worshipping spirits of the land, water, and fire. They believe in the balance of life and regeneration, with rituals centered around healing, growth, and the cycles of nature. Shamans play a crucial role in troll society, acting as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual worlds. Trolls also revere their ancestors, believing that their wisdom and strength live on in the stories and traditions passed down through generations.

Daily Life and Practices

Education

Troll education is practical and hands-on, focusing on survival skills, craftsmanship, and the oral tradition of storytelling. Young trolls learn from their elders, gaining knowledge about hunting, foraging, healing, and the history of their people. Storytelling is a central part of their culture, with tales of heroism, regeneration, and the natural world passed down through the generations.

Art and Music

Troll art is deeply connected to their environment and their regenerative nature. They create intricate carvings from wood and stone, often depicting scenes of nature, healing, and troll legends. Their music is rhythmic and powerful, using drums made from hollowed logs and other natural instruments. Trolls enjoy communal dances and songs, celebrating their resilience and the beauty of the world around them.

Interaction with Other Species

While some trolls in isolated communities might never interact with other species, many do. Troll settlements in other nations often pick up traits from that culture and mix it with their own. Trolls are known for being good traders and explorers, and compete with humans for being the first to settle new places. Their regenerative abilities and resilience make them valuable allies and formidable opponents.

Military and Defense

Due to the lack of larger groups, trolls often lack formal armies. But if they happen to be in battle, they are good fighters, capable of withstanding enemy attacks with their thick hides and regenerative abilities. Trolls prefer close combat, using their strength and resilience to overwhelm their foes. They are also skilled in guerrilla tactics, using their knowledge of the land to ambush and outmaneuver opponents.

Magic

Trolls tend to favor earthen magic, enhancing their already formidable resistance. They are also great alchemists.
